QuickBooks is an amazing accounting software, but sometimes, it tends to troublesome to its user. Also, the software may impact the performance of the computer system on which it has been installed.

Listed below are numerous issues that may arise on a user's computer, who have installed QuickBooks software.

1. QuickBooks 2017 is slow to open.

2. Unable to open a file.

3. The tasks of company files have slowed down due to increase in the number of sign-in users, i.e., multi-user environment.

4. A company file, behaving absolutely normal in the morning, gradually becomes slow to open and function as the day progresses.

5. The performance problem is affecting everyone in the office.

6. Intermittent performance issues.

7. The performance issue is existing with one or two persons only in the office.

8. Similar issues in data in different multiple data files that indicate the network is interrupting the data files.

Whenever you use QuickBooks Desktop, the data file gets larger. And as it grows, the requirement of resources to operate it increases. Therefore, you may require enhancing your network and make sure that the network setup is in accordance with the recommendations.

Hardware Requirement

QuickBooks Desktop performance relies on the server computer's Random Access Memory (RAM) that hosts the company file. Therefore, if your server computer has a RAM less than 4GB, you need to upgrade it to the one with higher capacity.

Location: Where You Store the Company Data File

The location, where you store the company file may affect QuickBooks' performance. Therefore, you have to make sure that you are using a Linux or Windows-based server computer. Also, avoid using a Network Attached Storage (NAS) Device.

The Network You Are Using

To get the best results, you must have a proper network setup. For the optimum efficiency of the QuickBooks, following recommendations are required to set up the network:

1. A hardwired network. Avoid wireless network.

2. Gigabit-capable router, Cat6 networking cables, and Gigabit network cards.

To know whether you have a Gigabit network or not, follow the below-given instructions:

1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Escape keys together on your keyboard.

2. From the displayed option, click on 'Networking' tab.

3. Go to Link speed and check whether the Local Area Connection is displaying 1 Gbps or not. If yes, you have a Gigabit network and in case, it shows 100 Mbps, you don't have it.

Identify the problem you are facing with QuickBooks and resolve the performance by following the below-given solutions:

Solution 1: Backup File to Reset Transaction Log (TLG) File

When you create a recent backup file, it helps improve QuickBooks’ performance. TLG (transaction log file) is used to track the modifications to the company file before drafted in the database.  

1. When you are running the program, click on File menu> Backup Company> Create Local Backup.

2. Select 'Local Backup,' followed by 'Options.'

3. Now, in the 'Tell us where to store the backup copies,' you have to select your 'Desktop.'

Note: You can also use any other local location.

4. Make sure 'Complete Verification' option is selected and after that, click on 'OK.'
Select 'Save it Now' option and click on 'Next.'

5. This will open 'Save Backup Copy' window. Next, select Desktop (or any other location) and then, 'Save' option.

6. At last, a backup file will be saved on your desktop by QuickBooks.

Solution 2: You Have to Test Speed via UNC Path and Desktop

Different sorts of network setup may affect the performance of your QuickBooks software. In case you are accessing the company file typically via a mapped drive, you can attempt to access the file using the UNC path.

Follow the below steps to open the file using UNC path:

1. At first, press Windows + E keys together on your keyboard to open 'Computer' and search under 'Network Location Area' option for the name of your server.

2. In here, you will see various mapped drivers. Carefully, look for the server computer name which is donated by two backslashes (). Note it down, along with the name of shared folders, written next to the server name.

3. Next, you have to put the server computer name and shared folder name in the format – 'ServerNameSharedFolderName' and UNC path will be 'ServerNameQBData.'

4. Make sure to note down this path. Now, open QuickBooks to select  ‘Open/Restore a Company file.'

5. Select the option 'Open a company file' and click on 'Next.'

6. In here, type in the UNC path that you have noted down and select 'Open' option.

7. This will display you a list of all the company files. From here, select the one that you want to open by clicking on the 'Open' option.

You Can Test Speed Locally If You Are on a Network

In a multiuser environment, you can test QuickBooks to determine whether the company file or the network is responsible for the issue. Follow the below instructions to copy the company file locally when a single user has logged into the file over the network, resulting in performance issues:

1. Open QuickBooks and press the F2 icon on your keyboard.

2. Go to File location to note the location of the company file.

3. Close QuickBooks and ask all the users to log out from the company file.

4. Open the ‘Start’ menu and select the 'Computer' option.

5. Now, browse to the file path that you have noted before.

6. Once you find the company file location, right click on it and select the 'Copy' option.

7. Go to your desktop and paste the file there.

8. Now, open QuickBooks once again and browse to the company file desktop location. Open this copied file.

9. As now the file is local, you can test the performance to check whether it is faster than being on the network. 

If the company file is still running slow, jump to solution 5; otherwise, follow the next solution.

Solution 3: Perform Disk Defragmentation by Reducing Company File Fragments

1. While the Company file is locally saved on your computer's desktop, you can create/restore a portable QuickBooks company file.

2. Now, perform the disk defragmentation (go to the servicer computer if the file location is on the network).

Note: Don't perform the disk defragmentation if your computer uses Solid State Drive (SSD).

     * Click on the 'Start' icon and choose the 'All Programs' option.

     * Then, follow Accessories> System Tools> Disk Defragmenter.

     * Click on 'Defragment' icon and follow the on-screen instructions. Defragmentation of your hard drive may take a while to complete.

Solution 4: When Anti-Virus Software or Any 3rd Party Program Is Conflicting

It is fairly possible that there are some conflicting programs present on your computer and may be causing performance issues. Follow the below given steps if you are utilizing QuickBooks in a network environment.

1. First of all, disable your anti-virus software temporarily on the server computer, which hosts the company file to check whether this improves the performance of QuickBooks or not.

2. Check for 3rd-party background apps if they are causing performance problems. For this, you can use Selective Startup, which will load the basic drivers and startup items only. Follow the below steps.

     * On your keyboard, press 'Windows + R' keys to open 'Run' command. In here, type 'msconfig' in the displayed box and hit 'Enter' key.

     * Now, choose 'Diagnostic Startup' option and press on the 'OK' icon.
Restart your computer and after that, test the QuickBooks’ performance.

     * If there is no improvement in the QuickBooks performance, go to the next solution. In case, the performance is improved, you have to find out which specific program is causing the performance issues.

When you are done, get back to normal operation from selective startup by following the given steps:

     * On your keyboard, press 'Windows + R' keys to open 'Run' command. In here, type 'msconfig' in the displayed box and hit 'Enter' key.

     * Now, choose 'Normal Startup' option and press the 'OK' icon.

     * Finally, restart your computer.

Solution 5: Check If There Is an Issue with the Company File

After following the above solutions, check whether the data file is causing the performance problems.

Note: Before proceeding further, check if multiple users are affected or it is just the case with one or two QuickBooks users. Also, note down how frequently the performance problems occur.

If QuickBooks Is Slow for All the Users

When the company file is slow for everyone, check for integrity issues.
Note: Before following the given steps, it is recommended for everyone to log out from the company file, except one person.

1. Go to the company file and follow: File Menu> Utilities> Verify Data> OK

2. In case there are any integrity issue, you will get a prompt to run a rebuild on data. If it finds errors, check QuickBooks.log or QBWIN.log files for errors and if not, you can continue with the company file.

If QuickBooks Is Intermittently Slow for Only Some Users

You can change the QuickBooks preferences and set user-specific preferences to maximize the performance.

Follow the below instructions if QuickBooks is slow while saving the transactions (Bills, Invoices, etc.):

     * Go to the ‘List Menu’ and then, ‘Templates’ to use a new template.

     * In the bottom-left corner, You will find a ‘Templates’ button. Click on it and select the 'New' option.

     * Select the template type that you want to create for your transaction and click on the 'OK' option.

     * In the top-left corner, you will see 'Manage Templates.' Click on it.

     * Enter a name for your new template and select the 'OK' option.

     * Once again, click on 'OK' to close the 'Basic Customization' window.

     * Now, using this new template on the transaction, check whether the performance is improved while saving or not.
